This article discusses the Manifesto of the Pioneers of New Education (1932), which upon completion of 80 years, continues to be quoted on a recurring basis in studies of history. We intend to discuss the issue of public school from the perspective of the pioneers in the sense contribuiir for research work on the history of Brazilian education. Favor of a free public education, mixed, secular and compulsory, the pioneers understood that the State should be responsible for the duty to educate the people, that this responsibility was often attributed to the family.
