The aim of this research was to investigate the learning of Kinematics taught in the discipline of Natural Sciences, in the 9th year of elementary school and its possible relation to mathematics learning. Data collection was conducted from three state schools in the city of Cuiabá - Mato Grosso - by means of questionnaires, interviews and tests (similar to large-scale assessments). With the aid of theories developed by Ausubel (1980), Coll (1994; 2006), Moreira (2006), Moreira and Masini (1982) and Zabala (1998), we conducted qualitative analyses and found that students present some difficulties in learning mathematics, which compromise resolutions of problem situations involving kinematics.
