The main purpose was to investigate the theoretic methodological perspectives in the evaluation of teaching and of the academic staff and to analyse the conceptions of quality and the methodological approaches underling different procedures of evaluation. The research was carried out through documental analysis (Bardin, 1977) and critical analysis (Habermas, 1984). Tendencies were identified: a shift away from the dichotomy quality-quantity to a multidimensional view of quality; emphasis on teaching as object of evaluation; use of qualitative methodologies and of meta-evaluation. Multidimensional projects of evaluation, integrating different approaches and assisted by a meta-evaluation Committee, are proposed.
