Abstract

This article discusses the limitations of the use of the average performance in the schools classification. There are two important points to be considered: the schools hove different customers in relation to relevant characteristics to the educational process and we expect that there is correlation between the performances of students that come from the some school. To obtain a classification that considers those two aspects, it was used a methodology of hierarchic linear models. That methodology that is an extension of the multiple linear regression analysis that makes possible a comparison between the customers and incorporates the correlation between the performance measures of the students from the some school. When we confront the classification obtained according to the average criteria with the classification provided by the hierarchic model, with the schools being classified by concepts, we can observe that there is a big change in the attributed concepts. In particular, the public schools move toward the best concepts. We can also observe that, although there is a variation among the schools, that one is not as expressive as the comparison of the non adjusted average seems to indicate.
