This article discusses the incorporation of the principle of autonomy in the public education system of the State of Pernambuco. It was based on a survey of the documents which, gave birth to the educational policies guidelines of the state of Pernambuco implemented in the period 1995 to 2002. The starting point 01 the survey was the understanding of the fact that the Brazilian neoliberal state reform originated the principle of school autonomy. Furthermore, school autonomy is viewed as o result of the foreign monitoring of our educational policy in the nineties. According to the neoliberal approach, the implementation of the school autonomy in Pernambuco followed the co-optation logic.
