Abstract

In this article we presented part of a research carried out with science teachers who proposed and developed environmental education projects. The two main goals were to identify environmental education conceptions and to describe the educational practices developed in these projects. The study focused on three teachers from three elementary public schools. Data collection was done throught interviews, observations of the pedagogic practice and documental analysis of the projects. Results revealed that the different conceptions of environmental education shaped the discourse and practice. It is safe to say that the projects will only be successful if the teachers participate in planning and development of proposals for environmental education. The structure, the operation of public schools, and the fragmentation of the school curriculum pose certain barriers to the practice of environmental education in the state public schools.
