Abstract

SANTOS, Mariline  and  NETO-MENDES, António. Neoliberalism in Education - and when 'individual utopias' are not enough?. J. Pol. Educ-s [online]. 2024, vol.18, e92026.  Epub Apr 08, 2024. ISSN 1981-1969.  https://doi.org/10.5380/jpe.v17i0.92026.

As a globally dominant ideology, neoliberalism serves as the foundation for the framework of many educational policies implemented, promoting market-driven logics such as the principle of freedom of choice, free competition, and decentralization processes. The importation of private sector management techniques, along with the redefinition of the state’s functions, deregulation, and privatization processes in the education sector, are also consequences of neoliberal influence. This study is a narrative and critical review whose main objective is to analyze the influence of neoliberalism in the field of Education, as well as the consequences that arise from it. From the selected articles, we conclude that neoliberalism and the commercialization of education bring more disvantage than advantages, such as the increase in segregation or the decrease in equity, giving rise in some contexts to resistance movements and processes of “demunicipalization” and “decommodification”. Neoliberalism, as a set of ideological forces, promotes individualism, leading to the decline of civic engagement and a shared sense of citizenship. Several authors highlight the need to create a social imaginary centered on reflective processes of democratic decision-making focused on equality/equity, reversing the path laid out by neoliberalism.
