Abstract

FREITAS, VERLAINE. The negative objectivity of aesthetic artifact. Adorno and the paradoxes of art as figuration of an emancipated subject. Rev. Comunic [online]. 2015, vol.22, n.3, pp.9-20. ISSN 2238-121X.  https://doi.org/10.15600/2238-121X/comunicacoes.v22n3p9-20.

The aim of this paper is to make a critical analysis of Adorno’s dialectical conception of the relation between subject and object, leading the discussion to the realm of art, where the aesthetic rationality is seen as critical and sublating the imprisoning inertia of empirical and instrumental reason. In the first part, we will talk about the abolition of mediations between subject and object, which sets the state of dehumanization characteristic of fully administered world. In the final part, we discuss the perspective of Adorno’s dialectical critic, specifically focusing on the concept of priority of the object within the art, highlighting the paradoxes present in this conception. Despite the critical issues we raise, we conclude pointing to the relevance of Adorno’s reflections, particularly about his categories of historical-philosophical configuration of the artwork, which condenses the effort to establish a mediation between empirical reality and the aesthetic utopia.
