The paper examines some transformations brought about by schooling and the desire of professionalization in the transition from orality to writing, such as residential changes, emergence of new political elites and monetarization of the indigenous economy. It also discusses the suggestion put forward by indigenous thinkers to use plants as a way out from the contradictions and backlashes springing from schooling. The analysis draws upon data gathered during various field trips in 2008 and 2009, journeying through various indigenous communities of Amazonian Peru, especially amongst the Shipibo-konibo, the Achuar, the Kichwa and the Ashaninka people.
