The present study aimed to analyze the initial education in Nursing in Brazil and Portugal, identifying similarities and differences. It is a qualitative research through documentary analysis and in-depth interviews, as recommended by Minayo. In these countries, Nursing education is at a higher level, in public and private institutions, based on legal provisions that recommend a generalist profile for the development of skills. However, there are differences in the understanding of Nursing, health/ disease process and the social commitment of formation. Considering the historical and social specificities of each country, initial formation in Nursing express, in large part, the general movement for privatization and commodification of higher education, as well as the vocational and technical model of initial formation in Nursing.
