This article discusses the education at distance methodology adopted in Brazil. It points out not only is conservative characteristic, but also by the need to contract the results achieved in a mass education process. It also indicates the need to make reflections on this methodology in order to open new avenues. Based on her master thesis, the author focusses in the text, the organization and the implementation of a experience carried out in the state of Bahia on videoconferencing (Telecurso 2000) ans its pedagogic, administrative and political sustainability. The text describes the historical aspects of EaD as well as current significant aspects, challenges and perspectives with the advent of the use of technology and informatics on mass education.
