The article describes the comprising and the methodological procedures used to the instruments application and the analysis of the results of the Basic Education Evaluation System in Brazil (SAEB) in 1997. It presents the proficiency scales obtained to the subjects: Math, Portuguese, Science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, as well as it discusses the profiles of the distribution of the students' proficiencies to Brazil and Federal Unities and by variables of age, sex, education level and the job situation of the students' parents. Finally, the article discusses the results of the application of hierarchy regression or multilevels indicating the variable intra and extra scholastic that proved that they are meaningful to explain the students' performances.
