Resumen

BLAY, Eva Alterman. Industrial and domestic work: the women work ideology. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1975, n.15, pp.8-20. ISSN 0100-1574.

In order to understand the attitudes of the Brazilian working women towards their role in society, with a special emphasis on their professional consciousness, it is necessary to consider three of the more important aspects, i.e., their country's economic level, the way the market for labour absorbs the female workers, and the attitudes of their families, friends and relatives towards their professional careers. In this paper, all data have been analized with relation to this last aspect, and in the following manner: a) acceptance by the working woman herself, by the members of her family, relatives and friends, both sexes - of her professional career; b) distribution of the work among family members; c) decision making among men and women as to the family way of living. It has been concluded that society maintains housekeeping and home duties as feminine roles; that women are either ostensibly or not discouraged by their families, specially by the male members. Through a valorization of women's home roles, society makes use of their domestic work without paying them anything, and ideologically keeps them away the market for labour.
