A proposal is presented for the analysis of the discourse in the teaching of reading and writing through the study of eight primers used in São Paulo from 1930 to 1970. The ideas of Benveniste and Pêcheux have guided the text analysis on forms of language manipulation, considering its organization. An impersonal discourse is revealed, of whichthe essential feature is the use of the "non-person". Significant changes can not be observed in the primers through the years, except for the graphic presentation.
