Abstract

MOREN, Elizabeth Belfort da Silva; DAVID, Maria Manuela Martins Soares  and  MACHADO, Maria da Penha Lopes. Diagnostics and analysys of errors in mathematics as a contribution for the learning process. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1992, n.83, pp.43-51. ISSN 0100-1574.

In classroom day-to-day errors are usually viewed as mere indicators of student achievement. This article describes a research where diagnostics and analysis of errors in Mathematics were used to identify levels of difficulty and to evaluate and guide the teaching/learning process. Based upon the operation of subtraction, tests were applied to students from 3rd to 6th grades of 11 public schools in Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro, so as to assess levels of difficulty. Results show that, whereas a good understanding of the structure of our numeration system implies a good achievement in subtraction, the reciprocal is not true, which allows suggestions to improve teaching in the classroom.
