In classroom day-to-day errors are usually viewed as mere indicators of student achievement. This article describes a research where diagnostics and analysis of errors in Mathematics were used to identify levels of difficulty and to evaluate and guide the teaching/learning process. Based upon the operation of subtraction, tests were applied to students from 3^rd to 6^th grades of 11 public schools in Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro, so as to assess levels of difficulty. Results show that, whereas a good understanding of the structure of our numeration system implies a good achievement in subtraction, the reciprocal is not true, which allows suggestions to improve teaching in the classroom.
