This research is an analysis of the Brazilian academic and scientific literature on sexual education from 1980 to 1993. Its main objective is an investigation of the predominant approach to sexual education. Nine categories of analysis, including the approach, were established and each text was then analysed and classified. The main characteristes of several approaches to sexual education are presented in order to help researchers and sexual educators understand which philosophical and pedagogical conceptions underly their work. The research provided significant data about the existing literature. Limitations and gaps affecting the theoretical body of knowledge were identified and guidelines are suggested for the improvement of this knowledge
