Abstract

Based on the findings of a research with 9-year-old children, this paper discusses the roles of family and of school in developing favorable attitudes towards an effective utilization of the information potential of a wide scope of information vehicles available. Inequalities not only in the access to these vehicles but also in the retrieval of the messages they convey are identified. Inequalities such as these highlight the question of cultural capital, since the information retrieval strategies used by the families can be limited by their own schooling level and amount of acquired knowledge. Finally, we demarcate a key area of action for schools aiming at fostering the students’ actual inclusion in the so-called information age.
