Abstract

FRANZOI, Naira Lisboa et al. School, knowledge and work: the research on PROEJA at Rio Grande do Sul. Educ. Real. [online]. 2010, vol.35, n.01, pp.167-186. ISSN 0100-3143.

This article discusses the experience of implementation of PROEJA - National Program that integrates vocational education and basic education for Adult and Young people - in the state of Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil. It analyzes some aspects related to tensions and relationship between school and workers’ knowledge. It also debates the following schooling elements: curriculum, enrollment, dropouts, and social inclusion. The paper begins presenting the program PROEJA and the research proposal that has been undertaken in Rio Grande do Sul. The methodology has been designed as follows: a) a map of general information of students’ profile, the PROEJA courses and the schools; b) case studies undertaken in some schools to follow up the program within local contexts. The article also discusses the relationship between school and work as a theoretical perspective to analyze data collected regarding the attempts to put into practice a proposal of a curriculum committed to integrate technical and general knowledge and some research data related to dropout, access and successful student performance. The authors conclude that Program faces several difficulties in its development, but they affirm that it is still a great possibility to improve educative experiences with workers.
