Context of Slavery. Education was a theme of wide repercussion during the process of abolition of slave work, especially in debates concerning the design and execution of the Rio Branco Law, in 1871. This article intends to present a set of documental sources that allow to analyze the relationship between education and the issue of abolition. Among these sources, the book Vítimas-Algozes: quadros da escravidão is highlighted for marking writer Joaquim Manoel de Macedo's involvement in the debate. Initially, we situate the book in the discussion about the abolition of slave work, and then we emphasize its importance relative to one of the most difficult themes to address in researches on slavery: the education of slave children. In this way, we try to demonstrate how the book provides an approach to some aspects related to the practices involved in these children's education.
