This paper is a theoretical synthesis of a course given to teachers of Portuguese. It attempts to characterize the object of the teaching/learning of that language as linguistic interaction, in the processes of reception and production of oral and written texts. For that purpose, it starts from a conception of language as interlocution and sees the reading and the writing as interactive processes in which the pragmatic dimension conditions the grammatical dimension of language. The fore it seeks to point out several levels in which the linguistic work of the reader/writer processes, and discusses the implications of this conception to the mother tongue teaching.
