Abstract

ENGEL, Cíntia Liara. Hyper-privatization of care: dementia care projects and their effects. Rev. Estud. Fem. [online]. 2022, vol.30, n.3, e79285.  Epub Sep 01, 2022. ISSN 1806-9584.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1806-9584-2022v30n379285.

A comparison between everyday practices of care for dementia and care policies aimed at aging with dependence in Brazil is carried out. Through an ethnography done on households, it is learned how care aggregates collectives of people, technologies, and money. From a documental analysis of the post-democratization care policies, moral projects of care, and their practical effects are narrated - perhaps the best known is what Guita Debert called the reprivatization of aging. However, this is no longer the current context; it is argued that the care perspective of the Brazilian alt-right has transformed this scenario based on three articulated movements: restriction of public services; precarization of the work of care and reform of race relations; moralization of care, and gender reform. Such a project is called hyper-privatization.
