Resumo

This proposal for a quality ranking for 92 Brazilian universities is based on three indicators representing undergraduate and graduate programs and research activities. Evaluation data gathered by Editora Abril are the source for the analysis of the undergraduate program quality; evaluations by CAPES are the indicators related to graduate programs; and evaluation of research activities is based on the Índice de Qualificação do Corpo Docente - IQCD (Index of Faculty Qualification). The proportion of full-time professors is used to weigh research activity in relation to teaching. The letter is, in turn, weighed by the number of undergraduate and graduate students. Each of these indicators is discussed from the viewpoint of its quality and relevance and some suggestions are made aiming at their improvement. The paper is more concerned with the methodological aspects of a ranking construction than with the results presented, although these seem to confirm the impressionistic knowledge that one has about the Brazilian universities.
