The "Evaluation System of Basic Education" - SAEB, assesses, through periodic evaluations, the academic performance of students, teacher effectiveness and school management in the public education system, by means of a nation-wide representative sample of schools, school directors, teachers and students. The system makes possible, because of the information it provides, specific studies directed towards a better understanding of particular features hinted at in its global report. Thus, using part of the data collected by SAEB - 2nd assessment, this paper investigates whether teachers really know their students school performance and whether the local evaluation made in the school measure the process and evolution of the students apprenticeship or whether they are just bureaucratic tasks. For this purpose, we correlated the data gathered in the "Opportunities for Learning" question-sheet, as applied lo 81 teachers of mathematics from the first grade of the elementary school ("1st Grade") from the State of Ceará sample, and the results of 721 students of the same teachers in the test "Mathematic Performance". All the 20 correlation coefficients yielded non-significant values, dose to zero. This shows that the teachers do not know the school performance of their students and that the evaluations carried out in the school do not classify the students correctly, and even less, they do not accompany the students learning process, to detect and correct problems and to overcome difficulties.
