This research is the result of evaluation of learning process of students in public schools in the state of Ceará. It was carried out towards the end of 1996. The objective was to estimate the metric parameters of the items components of a portuguese test destinated for the students of the 4th year of primary school, using the Item Response Theory (IRT). Analysing the answers of 17576 students with an average age of 12,27(DP= 1,94), tile difficulty and discrimination of the 25 items on the portuguese test were estimated by using the logistic model of two parameters. The items characteristic curves (ICC's) and those of the test (TCC) were also estimated.
