Abstract

This study compares the academic ability and an index of socioeconomic status of the students admitted in Law School of UFMG and PUC in 1995. It shows that the UFMG receive students who have bigger academic ability and index of social position that those admitted by PUC. For first result, the entrance tests in the two universities were first equated through Item Response Theory models. The use of this methodology was possible since both universities kept the answers of all students to all items of the entrance tests and a large number of students took both exams. The result of this study provides empirical justification for using value added models as the main form of presenting the results being obtained from the ENC (National Examination of University Graduates).
