SANTOS, Cássio Miranda dos. O acesso ao ensino superior no Brasil: a questão da elitização. Ensaio: aval. pol. públ. educ. [online]. 1998, vol.06, n.19, pp.237-257. ISSN 0104-4036.

The article in question concerns the history of the access to the university in Brazil focusing its socio-economical determinants. Therefore, the history of Brazil was divided in two phases, the first of which called "Luso-brasileira" phase, when young Brazilians had to go to Europe for their university studies; the second one, the national phase, after de Portuguese royal family come to our country and colleges were here installed, up until the last decades of the 20th century. According to the happenings related with the access to the university studies in these two phases, an analysis of the discussed socio-economical discrimination is held, promoted by the various mechanisms and instruments used in the selection, including the "vestibular". Nevertheles the confirmation of the predominance of the students from the stronger purchasing power segments in the institutions of university studies, a disélitist tendency is identified in the access to colleges and universities. Such tendency points to a change, at medium date, in the profile of the student of the institutions of college studies in Brazil.
