The text presents an account of Brazilian education during the nineties using principally official data (IBGE, MEC). It identifies the main problems to be confronted by the Brazilian educational system, such as the fight against illiteracy, the high rates of dropout and repletion in the primary educational levels, distortions in the grade/age relationships, an increase in the demand fir high school teaching, a scarcity in the number of available openings in higher education, etc.. It describes and analyzes the way the Brazilian State has defined methods ans activities wich combine regulations, redistribution polices and diversified and ample systems of evaluation. And this with a vision for significant reforms in the educational system to prepare its citizens to meet the challenges of world globalization.
