This is a brief study on some critical issues in a distance education system. The main aspects discussed are those related to tutorship and evaluation. The role of tutorship in the system as well as its type, effectiveness and consequences are considered. Tutorship is also viewed as a subsystem in constant interaction with others. Some examples are presented, such as the Distance Education Project at Graduate Level developed by CEP (Centro de Estudos de Pessoal do Exército) associated with UFRJ (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro). The second issue deals with evaluation: types, test-building, alternatives roles are considered. The main topic of this study is concerned with the necessary interaction of the evaluation subsystem with tutorship and the whole distance education system. The CEP-UFRJ project is also presented as example. As conclusion a holistic view of distance education is emphasized.
