The paper analyses the educative processes that occur outside the school, in organized processes of civil society. These processes are derived from collective actions of the so called Third Sector of the society, that includes non-governmental organizations (NGO's), other non-profitinstitutions acting in the social area and some social movements. The paper defines what is non-formal education, based on its scope and its universe of realization. The importance of the non-formal education in this end of millennium is emphasized, in view of the transformations determined by the economy globalization, by the increasing number of non-formal activities and the role that NGO's from the Third Sector have assumed in the governmental reforms and participative politics between public organs and the organized civil society.
