This paper deals with the idea of Education, which happens in a school, as a tool that would make possible the social mobility. This is a well spread social representation found in the general imaginary of the Brazilian society though it is not always true. Problems like the quality of school, how to access to school and the aims of school are not yet completely solved, so it can not yet, in addition to these aims, even in an indirect way, serve as a tool of social progression. The role of the school and also the role of the teacher/educator were analyzed in this context and at the some time the political and ideological meaning of the school in the society was emphasized. The study of the school and its different aims is a question which requires first of all a reflection about its identity. We have observed that school can not be analyzed apart from social influences, but it should not be taken as a tool for the desired social mobility.
