The text is the result of a research about the evaluation of Mathematics in Elementary and Junior High Schools and its implications in teachers’ graduation. The objective is to explain what is occurring with students and teachers, and to elaborate on an alternative proposal for the quality of education, with the goal of improving the education instead of showing problems only. Data is presented, relative to success and failure in Mathematics students in public and private schools in the city of Itajubá -MG in 1995 and 1996. There is also a research with two fifth grade classes and a commentary about the teachers graduation.
