The fast expansion of secondary education in Brazil proposes new challenges, as space management. This paper reports results of a research project on the Federal District public school system, based on a case study and a survey. According to its results: 1) students, in spite of grade-age distortion and low income, very often did not work; 2) school location, in residential areas, minimized transportation costs, with favorable impact on equity; 3) part of the students looked for more reputed schools, far from its home, in a process similar to a race to occupy better quality schooling niches. Conclusions stress implications for school location and enrolment strategies in order to meet the demands for efficiency and equity.
