This research tries to investigate how students perceive information technologies. Aiming at achieving this purpose, a questionnaire was answered by 556 students of fundamental and medium levels of education who, in 2001, attended four schools - both private and public - in Rio de Janeiro. We consider that in order to achieve goals related to learning, it is essential that participants in the project try to share meanings. In the case of technology applied to Education, this need is a priority because there are hints which indicate that teachers and students go through very different experiences. The computer has been considered by students as a learning tool and the Internet, a communication and research tool. From the data obtained from the research, we present teachers suggestions on how to use such technologies in order to enhance the teaching-learning process.
