This study aimed to analyze the role of research in a program of initial formation for teacher of Physical Education for Basic Education. We tried to understand if research is an integral component of the National Curriculum for Teacher Training for Basic Education, and analyzing the research design established in the Political Pedagogical Project of the training course, and the perception of participants upon inclusion of research in the course program. We have used the following as research tools: document analysis, questionnaire, and focus group. The research was conducted in an institution located in the city of Goiânia (Goais, Brazil) with teachers and students of the course. It was understood that research is included in the National Curriculum Guidelines for training of teachers for basic education as one of its guiding principles for preparation and professional practice, but in a pragmatic perspective, restricted solely to the process of teaching and learning and differentiated from scientific research. In the Political-Pedagogical Degree in Physical Education, research is included as a means of knowledge’s production and its indissoluble relation with education in all disciplines is set as a core principle. The speakers acknowledged the survey as an important element of the program. It was evident that the inclusion of research in the curriculum of teacher training in Physical Education overcame the pragmatic vision established in the National Curriculum Guidelines for the training of teachers in Basic Education.
