The low levels of reading comprehension among students from elementary and high school in Brazil, mainly in the state of Alagoas, which have been constantly publicized in the mass media, demand academic researches on the problem. In view of that, this research, on the reading and cognition area, aimed to verify reading comprehension and the use of the inferential process among students from the elementary school´s ninth grade of three public schools and three private schools in Maceió, in the state of Alagoas, which was carried out during the second semester of 2012. The authors conducted a qualitative and interpretative research based on quantitative data, according to the cognitive approach of reading, for which the previous knowledge is essential for the inferential process and, consequently, for reading comprehension. In order to collect data, two questionnaires were applied as well as a multiple choice reading test and a cloze test. The data analysis showed that among the 67 students from the public schools, 56 (83%) of them presented deficits in reading comprehension, while among 111 students from the private schools, 38 (34%) of them presented such deficits, especially on questions which demanded previous knowledge activation in order to consolidate inferential strategies which are essential to fluent and meaningful reading.
