In 2021 we celebrate the centenary of Paulo Freire, patron of Brazilian education and one of the most read and translated authors in the world. By commemorating one hundred years of this author, who is so fundamental to the field of Education, we reinforce the belief and commitment to a liberating, emancipatory education, committed to the exercise of citizenship and dialogue as ways of knowing and relating to others and to the world. We understand education, in Freire’s thought, as a response to liberal and conservative forces that intend to make the school a mere space for reproducing content and controlling bodies and existences. Education as a “practice of freedom”, woven and lived collectively, in order to assert the strengths of everyone and anyone. In times of death, hate, violence and segregation policies, such as the one we live in Brazil under bolsonarism and its irreparable hunger to intensify inequalities and further segregate the less favored classes, reaffirming the relevance and importance of Paulo Freire is affirm education as an experience of building new worlds. In this sense, we talked with the philosopher and educator Walter Kohan, professor at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and author of several books and articles, including the work “Paulo Freire more than ever”. Kohan tells us about Paulo Freire's political and pedagogical current in such difficult times and invites us to perceive his relationship with childhood, with a creative and affirmative force, so necessary for the invention of im-possible worlds.
