Abstract

MOYSES, Sarita Maria Affonso. Literature and history: Images oi reading and readers in XIX century Brazil. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1995, n.00, pp.53-62. ISSN 1413-2478.

The text analyzes relations which Afro-Brazilians were able to establish during slavery with regard to language and reading, using data about Brazil in the 19th century. Slavery denied humanity and destroyed traditional forms of expression of African culture, thus depriving this population of their right to develop language. This rupture represents an initial confrontation with written language, the white man's language. The article describes how the Afro Brazilians develop their own approaches to oral and written language, and to knowledge, by means of examples from various historic sources.
