The article examines the organization of public school teachers by studying the performance of one of its representantive associations, APEOESP (Public education teachers association of the Stale of São Paulo), situating it in the process of transition towards democracy. It highlights the vicissitudes and alternatives that collective action and gender relations can suggest for the analysis. It also attempts to demonstrate how the conflicts of this class go from making democratic ideals concrete, within the process of democratic transition, until, with the growth of recession, salary issues become the principal point of union of the teachers' organizatio1l.
