An attempt is made to relate modern day youngsters working in the rural area -to the nature of the restructuring of Chilean economy. The reflection points out that the economy's restructuring demands ·great flexibility in labor relations and that this is one of the characteristics of youngsters, especial/y women. The article brings together three interrelated hypotheses: a) the nature of the transformations Chile has undergone, especially in the exporting agricultural sector, and the appearance and nature of modern rural youth; b) the type of state and social action that are developed taking into account the characteristics of this new person; c) the particular profile of these workers as well as the social organization and movement' which appear as a consequence.
