DAHER, Andréa. Writing and conversion: Tupi grammar and the bilingual catechisms in Brazil in the XVI century. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1998, n.08, pp.31-43. ISSN 1413-2478.

This work is a reflection about some literate practices in Brazil in the XVI century with an overview of the editorial production of bilingual catechisms and grammars of the Tupi language. An effort is made to determine the nature of these printed works, the conditions in which they were written based on the establishment of models and standards that would guide Indian representations - or Indian language representations- grounded an theological and political categories such as “convertibility" or “inconstancy", conditions for reception once the target group was focused as well as the use of the texts by missionaries colonists and Indians.
