Abstract

SILVA JR., João dos Reis  and  SGUISSARDI, Valdemar. Reconfiguring higher education in Brazil and redefining public and private spheres in  the 90's. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1999, n.10, pp.33-57. ISSN 1413-2478.

The objective of the text is to characterize the Brazilian higher learning system in the 90's at a time when it is being reconfigured. It discusses its connection with the present context of State reform and the changes within the Brazilian productive system. The text examines, in the light of theories that sustain them, speeches and proposals of the agents from different sectors - public, private and community - involved in this reconfiguration process, as well as the reaction of these sectors and the different segments involved in higher learning towards the transformation which is underway. In conclusion, it analyses possible consequences that these changes, if effected, would bring to the several constituent aspects of the institutional identity of the university.
