Abstract

FERRARO, Alceu Ravanello. Diagnosis of schooling in Brazil. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1999, n.12, pp.22-47. ISSN 1413-2478.

This text presents the principal results of the diagnosis of the schooling of children and adolescents in Brazil. It was written with the support of CNPq (an official research support council) and is based on data from Contagem da população 1996 and on the demographic censuses of 1980 and 1991. The research confirms, on one hand, that the greatest problem of basic education is exclusion within the school, which is a result of recurring failure, to which the vast majority of Brazilian students are submitted from the beginning of their schooling process. On the other hand, the research also reveals that, despite progresses made as to inclusion in the school system from 1980 to 1991 and then from 1991 to 1996, it cannot be said as yet that access to education in Brazjl has been universalized. Analysis of the data presented in Contagem da população 1996 still does not permit us to say that the problem of exclusion from school has already been solved, especially for those under 7 years old and those over 13, where indicators show that over 10% are not in school.
