This paper analyzes the privatization proposals of the Argentine university policies made by the World Bank and by local foundations that design reform policies of neo-liberal inspiration. These reform policies are aimed at the construction of a new sense as a reply to the ongoing university crisis. We present some of the strategies, mechanisms and omissions that characterize the legitimation process of a new market-based educational model, that put the historical university model, oriented -sometimes only at the discursive level- by the reformist principles, at question. We maintain that these proposals, oriented by the introduction of the mercantile logic in the university field, put at issue both its sense as a public institution and its role as a producer and diffuser of the scientific knowledge to serve the needs of social majorities.
