This article brings the results of a research that investigated how the teaching materials of the Programa Ler e Escrever have been used in 4th and 5th grade classrooms of a State Elementary School in the city of Campinas (SP). The empirical material was produced by observing classes in both grades and using information provided by the teachers. The results show: (i) little organizational variability in classes and little interaction between students for discussing the activities proposed; (ii) that the teachers' difficulties in using the material were sometimes transferred to students; (iii) that the teacher may make the mistake of seeing the reading and writing practices as something natural and easy to learn, considering written language as a obvious object that reveals itself alone. It is necessary to reflect on the day-by-day actions that end up automatized due to labor conditions, which makes it more difficult to create space for discussion.
