This paper analyzes the use of orienteering sports as a satisfactory didactic instrument to cartographic literacy, so that students learn to read and understand social reality through the correlation with cartographic representations. This is pivotal for students to understand the importance of knowledge about the analysis and interpretation of maps in an interrelation with social reality. We carried out a field survey with participant observation and questionnaires to fifth grade-students (elementary school) in a municipal school in Campo Grande (Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil). The results show orienteering sports worked in a didactic way and can be used as instruments to the learning of cartographic elements, such as the transcription to the role of what is observed in space, the perception of class conflicts in a place’s characteristics, and the distinction of the historical “marks” of social classes in space. However, this does not exhaust the large, complex, and contradictory need of a pedagogical treatment of the various disciplines in the understanding of the revealed thematic.
