Abstract

AGRA, Michelli  and  COSTA, Valdelúcia Alves da. JOSÉ VERÍSSIMO'S CONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE FORMATION OF THE BODY BY PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN THE 19TH CENTURY NATIONAL EDUCATION SCENARIO. Revista Teias [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.73, pp.246-260.  Epub Aug 24, 2023. ISSN 1982-0305.  https://doi.org/10.12957/teias.2023.69877.

This article derives from a doctoral thesis whose object of study is the formation of teachers in class society with an emphasis on physical education, analyzing the educational proposal of José Veríssimo Dias de Mattos, in his work ‘A Educação Nacional (1906)’, focusing on the discussion of the role of physical education in the process of modernization in Brazil. José Veríssimo's conceptions regarding the formation of a nation in newly republican Brazil refer to the need to develop a proposal for national education that considers physical education as a mandatory curricular subject at school. The theoretical framework adopted in the problematization and analysis of the subject studied is the critical theory of society. It is concluded that physical education, thought by Veríssimo (1906), would be a means to achieve civility and discipline of the people, seeking to promote changes in Brazilian customs and habits of the 19th century. However, recognition is attributed to Veríssimo's effort to make physical education a reality in developing Brazil, in which, according to his thinking, there was still no education worthy of being called ‘National’. Consequently, Veríssimo's proposal for physical education (1906) meets the dream of a national education project and, for its realization, it was necessary to reflect on the grandeur of the desired Brazilian homeland.
