Abstract

FIRODE, Alain. Education and individuality in Diderot. Educação e Filosofia [online]. 2017, vol.31, n.63, pp.1361-1383.  Epub Mar 09, 2021. ISSN 1982-596X.  https://doi.org/10.14393/revedfil.issn.0102-6801.v31n63a2017-04.

This paper aims at reading Diderot’s various educational writings (La réfutation d’Helvétius, le Plan pour une université), taking as guiding principle the philosophical idea of « individuality ». According to us, Diderot’s educational thought can be seen as an individualistic theory of education. The originality of Diderot’s analyses lies in the fact that they deeply depart from the theories rooted in the humanist and universalistic tradition to which the currently educational doctrines belong. Contrary to them, Diderot’s theory of education argues that the ultimate goal of the educational process is the independance of the individual (and not the autonomy of the thinking subject).

Keywords : Education; Diderot; Individualism.
