Resumen

CUNHA, Marcus Vinicius da. John Dewey in the Manifest of the Pioneers of New Education. Cad. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.2, pp.474-486. ISSN 1982-7806.  https://doi.org/10.14393/che-v16n2-2017-9.

Recognized as one of the most important documents in the history of Brazilian education, the Manifesto of the Pioneers of New Education, elaborated by Fernando de Azevedo in 1932, does not mention nominally the American philosopher and educator John Dewey. Despite this, the document contains phrases and expressions similar and even identical to those used by Dewey, fact that is confirmed by several researchers dedicated to this subject. This article examines the passages of the Manifesto that contain ideas usually attributed to Dewey, with the intention of discussing if there is correspondence with the meanings intended by the philosopher in his works. In addition, the article discusses why Fernando de Azevedo does not identify Dewey as the author of such ideas. Based on theoretical references of the rhetoric, the conclusion of the article allows to raise hypotheses and to suggest the need for new investigations on the problem in question.

Palabras clave : Brazilian Education (History); John Dewey; Manifest of the Pioneers of New Education; Rhetoric.
