Abstract

ZAVALA-ARNAL, Carmen M.  and  RAMON-SALINAS, Jorge. THE RECEPTION IN SPAIN OF ALTERNATIVE SYSTEMS OF MUSICAL EDUCATION AT THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY: FELIPE PEDRELL AND MUSICALERÍAS (1906). Hist. Educ. [online]. 2022, vol.26, e119698.  Epub Nov 30, 2022. ISSN 2236-3459.  https://doi.org/10.1590/2236-3459/119698.

The reception in Spain of some of the alternative methods of traditional musical notation is analyzed, reflecting the new paths initiated in the field of music education, developed in parallel in Europe and America during the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Felipe Pedrell (1841-1922), as one of the most relevant figures in the Hispanic musicological and pedagogical panorama of his time, echoes some of them through his press articles, offering his critical view. Pedrell´s opinion about the three methods: Tonic Sol-Fa (1841), the method of the Paraguayan-Argentine Ángel Menchaca (1904) and the Bitiru Method of Ramón Galbarriatu (1906), collected in press articles, compiled and published in Musicalerías (1906). In them he shows his interest in musical education and in these musicographic systems that are proposed and disseminated as new educational strategies.
